Nelson Bertholf, well known Madison county resident and president of the Madison County Savings Bank, died at the Winterset hospital, Friday morning, March 16th, 1934, after a short illness. Mr. Bertholf who was 63 years of age, had been in poor health for the past fifteen years, but his condition was not regarded as serious. He had a minor operation at the hospital Monday night, and he was recovering satisfactorily, when a stomach ulcer, which he had had for a long time, broke through the walls of the stomach and peritonitis developed, causing his death, at eight o'clock Friday morning.
Mr. Bertholf was born November 7, 1870, in Webster township. He was a son of James and Harriett Rachel Bertholf, pioneer residents of this community. When he was a boy three years of age, the family moved to a farm in Lincoln township, that has since belonged to the Bertholf famiy, and is now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brownell. Mr. Bertholf attended the rural schools and was graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1888. He attended a business college at Quincy, Illinois, for several years, and in 1892 started working in the office of the McCall Land and Loan company. He served as an abstractor. About thirty years ago, when the Madison county bank was reorganized, he was chosen cashier, and served in that capacity, until the death of E. E. McCall in March 1931. He was then named president and continued in that position after the Madison County and the Winterset Savings bank were merged in June 1932.
The marriage of Mr. Bertholf and Miss Nell Whedon took place in 1910. Mrs. Bertholf and their one daughter Jane survive him. He also leaves his aged mother, Mrs. James Bertholf of Winterset, and one sister, Mrs. Armina Brownell. A sister, Mrs. Leonard Thrift died in 1918 and his father, in 1925.
Mr. Bertholf took an active interest in the Masonic lodge, and served as treasurer of the organization for many years.
The Rev. A. R. Weed conducted his funeral services, at Tidrick's funeral home, Sunday afternoon, March 18th, at 2 o'clock, and burial was in the Rock City cemetery. Rev. R. C. Cully, assisted with the services.
