Services Held For MELVIN PHILLIPS

Melvin M. Phillips, 51,of 305 Hutchings, Winterset died Wednesday, March 7, 1979, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Winterset. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery with Rev. Phil Hall officiating.

Mr. Phillips was born on December 14, 1927 in Alanthus, Missouri and was the son of Jesse and Mayme Miller Phillips. On October 1, 1949 he was married to Wilma Thomas at Stanberry, Missouri.

A 1946 graduate of Stanberry High School, Mr. Phillips was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Stanberry Masonic Lodge No. 109 A.F. & A.M., the Winterset American Legion, First Baptist Church, and Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. He farmed and owned a general store in Alanthus, Mo. for seven years, worked for Sinclair Oil Co. over 17 years, worked at the Madison County Memorial Hospital two years and for Thermal Heating and Air Conditioning two years. He lived in Winterset for 23 years.

He is survived by his wife Wilma; his mother, Mayme Phillips of Stanberry, Mo.; two sons, Larry of Panora and Craig of Iowa City; a brother, Merlin Phillips of Kansas City; and three sisters, Eula Peterson and Bernice McGinley of Stanberry and Bonnie Huff of Iola, Kan. He was preceded in death by his father.
