Death Of JOHN C. GORMAN

Overseas Veteran Passes After Three Months Illness

John C. Gorman died at his home in west Winterset Monday afternoon after a three months illness from ulcer colitis.

Mr. Gorman, who was born in Cedar Rapids, 36 years ago, moved with his parents to Mitchell county where he attended the schools of Orchard and Osage. After graduating from high school in 1914 he attended the Kentucky Military Institute and later the State University at Iowa City.

During the World War he volunteered and saw active service overseas with the 128th field artillery of the 35th division of the American Expeditionary forces.

After the close of the war he was for a time engaged in the clothing business at Ruthven. While at Ruthven he was married to Marion C. Smith of Winterset on December 31, 1923. They moved to Winterset seven years ago in June where Mr. Gorman was for four years manager of the Rock City Oil company. After the sale of that business, he engaged in the insurance business in which he continued until stricken with illness.

He was actively identified with the Masonic order and the American Legion and was an officer and regular attendant of the First Presbyterian church. He served the Ruthven lodge of Masons as Worshipful Master, was a Past Commander of Green-Rogers post of the American Legion and was vice commander of the sixth district at the time of his death. He was commander of the local Legion at the time the Legion pool was built and had a very large part in the promoting of the project.

Immediate relatives are his mother, Mrs. Minnie Gorman of Akron, Colorado, his wife, formerly Marion C. Smith and one son, John Edward Gorman, aged seven.

During the seven years he resided in Winterset he gained a wide acquaintance and a host of warm friends. Unselfishness, thoughtful kindness and a splendid devotion to his loved ones were traits of character that marked his daily life.

Rev. R. C. Cully conducted his funeral services which were held at the Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Wednesday and burial was made in the Rock City cemetery. A military escort from Green-Rogers post led the funeral procession and assisted in the burial services.
