MORTUARY

Allice James Lathrum

Alice James, the eldest daughter of Annon and Phoebe James, was born on a farm in the southeast part of Scott township, in Madison county, Iowa, southwest of Elm Grove church on the 15th day of November, 1855, and died at her home in St. Charles, Sunday evening, April 21, 1932, aged 76 years, 5 months and 9 days. It was on the farm that she received her training and grew to womanhood.

On the 18th day of September 1879, she was united in marriage to John Lathrum a veteran of the Civil war. He was a member of Co. E. 47th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, enlisting from Madison county, Iowa. To this union were born three sons, Frederick Garfield, John William, and Oliver Stephen. Frederick died in infancy.

She and her family lived on a farm east of Elm Grove church.

Mr. Lathrum passed away in the year 1897. She continued to live there until about twenty years ago when she with her sons, moved to St. Charles which has been her home ever since.

She became a member of the Methodist church of St. Charles in 1921 under the ministry of Rev. Andrews.

Her parents were early pioneers of this county, coming from Indiana in 1851. They raised a pioneer family of eleven children of which seven have passed on.

Mrs. Lathrum has been a sufferer for many years, and for the last eleven years, has never walked. She bore her afflictions uncomplainingly and was always ready to greet you with a smile.

She leaves to mourn her two sons, John William and Oliver Stephen of St. Charles; two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Annon Fenimore of Carthage, Missouri; Mrs. Lily Simmons of Peru, Oliver James of Winterset, Jefferson James of Des Moines and Samuel James of Kansas. Nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

"The precious one from us is gone, A place is vacant around our fireside, Which never can be filled."

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church, conducted by her pastor, Rev. L. W. Nixon, and interment was made in Union Chapel cemetery, by the side of her husband. The pallbearers were Walter Downs, Henry Imes, A. R. Downs, H. E. Banta, H. R. Huribut and H. A. Mueller.
