Mrs. John Holmes, member of a pioneer family in Scott township died Saturday, April 12, 1952, at the Memorial hospital in Winterset.
Her death occurred on her eighty-fifth birthday.
Mrs. Holmes was the former Elvira Harrell, daughter of Edmond and Margaret Harrell, who were among the early settlers of the county. She was the last surviving member of the Edmond Harrell family.
She was born in Scott township April 12, 1867. On Sept. 24, 1885, she was married to John Holmes. They were the parents of one daughter, Mabel, now Mrs. Ora Haines.
As a small child she had joined the Zion church in Scott township. She was also affiliated with the Women's Relief corps. She and Mr. Holmes had lived in Winterset for many years.
In addition to her husband and daughter, she leaves two nieces, Goldie and Lota Armstrong, who were reared in her home; two grandsons; and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held this Tuesday from the Richards Funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Arthur Weed of Tingley. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
