John R. Kale, son of Eliza and John Kale, was born near Elm Grove, Feb. 9, 1864 and died Dec 24, 1922. With the exception of a few years spent in Kansas his entire life was spent in and near Winterset. In 1895 he was married to Nellie Frasier of Warren county and to this union were born two daughters, Helen and Grace.
When about 40 years of age his health began to fail and the last few years he was a constant sufferer. He was very patient during his sickness, always thoughtful of others and deeply solicitous for the welfare of his family, who so faithfully cared for him.
He was a carpenter by trade and in his line of work he was always foursquare strictly honorable in all his dealings. For several years he was a member of the city council and during those years his judgment was much sought after in the management of the affairs of Winterset. As a man he had many warm friends who held him in high esteem It might be truly said of him, “None knew h’m but to love him none names him but to praise”
There survive him his wife two daughters Grace, at home, and Mrs. Joe Brake of Dubuque, and six sisters: Mrs. Sayre and Mrs Sutten of Ensign Kans., Mrs. Goodner of St Cloud, Minn; Mrs. Landis and Mrs. Whitlow of Des Moines and Mrs. Guiberson of Winterset. He also leaves one brother, Joe and a half brother, Elmer Allen, both of Winterset.
Funeral services were conducted from the home on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 by Rev, E. B. Chancellor pastor the Church of Christ. Burial in the Winterset cemetery.
