Gerald C. Bek, one of Madison county's outstanding citizens, died this Monday, July 20, 1970, at his home in Scott township. Death followed an extended illness. He was 60 years of age.
Mr. Bek was born at Massena on May 28, 1910, a son of C. C. and Pearl Erickson Bek. When he was 5 years old he came with his family to the Oak Grove community in Madison county, where his early life was spent. He graduated from Winterset High school with the class of 1927, and from Iowa State university at Ames, where he received a doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1938.
He engaged in the practice of veterinary medicine at Kiester, Minn., until World War II, in which he served as an officer in the veterinary corps of the U. S. army.
In 1952 he moved with hi family back to Madison county and had engaged in farming here. He was accorded a leading roll in the affairs of this community, serving as member and president of the Winterset Community School board, member of the Madison county Welfare board, and of the Farmers Cooperative association board of directors. He was a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Bek was married July 17, 1938, at Mondamin, to Frances Hewitt, who survives him. He also leaves his father, C. C. Bek of Winterset; five daughters, Mrs. Don Stanley of Winterset, Mrs. George Paull of Enid, Okla., and Linda, Karen and Vanna Bek, at home. He also leaves one grandchild; and five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Dorothea Ferguson of Grand Junction, Colo., Mrs. Marguerite Wight and Mrs. Maxine Bruett of Winterset, Carl Bek of Winterset and Joe Bek of Kingsley, Iowa.
Mr. Bek was a member of Zion Federated church.
Funeral services were to be held at 1:30 p.m. this Wednesday from the Grace Baptist church in Winterset, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Glenn Williams. Burial was to be made in the Winterset cemetery.
