John Woodrow Mitchell, 83, of Des Moines, died April 23, 1997 of complications from emphysema at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services were April 26 at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.
He was born in rural Guthrie County and had moved to Des Moines in the 1950s. He had been a resident of Madison County prior to moving to Des Moines. He had been employed with Principal Life Insurance in the landscaping and maintenance department. He was a member of the VFW and Farm Bureau.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Evelyn Carter and husband Howard of Winterset and Marlene June and husband Wesley of Nampa, Idaho; two sons, Richard Mitchell and wife Margie of Arbuckle, Calif., and Dennis Mitchell and wife Devra of Caldwell, Idaho; one step-daughter, Mary Fortune and husband Jack of Pleasant Hill; one sister, Dorothy Driscoll of Winterset; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
