Richard D. Smith, 21, of near Winterset died in the wreckage of his car last Thursday morning when it collided with a pickup truck, loaded with feed, on the West Star road just west of Winterset.

The death was the second highway fatality of this year in Madison County.

The accident occurred at the crest of the hill about 100 yards east of the point where the railroad tracks cross the West Star road. Smith was eastbound, coming up the hill, and lost control of his car on the rock surfaced road. It skidded into the path of the westbound pickup, owned by M. Young and Company of Winterset. Robert L. Pearson of Winterset, driver of the truck, was taken to Memorial hospital for treatment of minor head and chest injuries.

Richard Dean Smith was born at Dexter May 24, 1951, a son of Willard C. and Vina I. Smith. His life was spent in the Earlham, Redfield and Winterset areas. He graduated from Earlham High School with the class of 1969 and from the Des Moines Area Community College, receiving an Associate of Arts degree in 1971. He was employed by the Farmers Cooperative at Winterset at the time of his death.

He was married August 15, 1970, at the Earlham United Methoidst Church, to Shelia M. Taylor, who survives him.

In high school he was active in Future Farmers of America and in college was a member of Phi Beta Lambda business fraternity. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. His religious affiliation was with the Earlham United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his infant son and an infant sister.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Smith of Earlham; and two sisters, Mrs. Joyce Nelson of Des Moines and Mrs. Russell Bartlett of Clare, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the Earlham United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ward Young. Burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery.

Richard Dean Smith, son of Willard C. and Vina I. Smith was born at Dexter, Iowa May 24, 1951. He departed from this life in an automobile accident October 26, 1972 at the age of 21 years, 5 months and 2 days.

Richard lived his life in the Earlham, Redfield, and Winterset area. Attending Earlham High School, he graduated in May of 1969, and went on to school at the Boone Campus of the Des Moines Area Community College, receiving an Associate of Arts degree in 1971.

On August 15, 1970 he was united in marriage to Shelia Mondeva Taylor, at the Earlham United Methodist Church.

Richard was employed by the Farmers Cooperative in Winterset. He enjoyed the outdoors and hunting. He was a thoughtful and loving person and was ready to help others when help was needed. In high school he belonged to the Future Farmers of America, in college was a member of the Phi Beta Lambda business fraternity, and he was in the United States Army Reserve. He was a member of the Earlham United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Richard Shawn; by his brother-in-law, Roger Nelson; and by an infant sister, Sandra Jean.

Surviving are his wife Shelia of rural Winterset; his parents, Willard and Vina Smith of Earlham, his sister, Joyce Nelson of Des Moines; his sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Russell Bartlett of Clare, Iowa; his grandmothers, Minnie Emmons of Stuart and Bertha Smith of Earlham. Also mourning his passing are his parents-in-law, Henry and Edna Taylor, his brothers-in-law and their families: Ronald and Rose Taylor of Des Moines, and Edward and Marge Taylor of Houston, Texas. In addition there are a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of neighbors and friends who share in the loss so deeply felt by all.
