JAMES MADISON GUYE

James Madison Guye, the son of the pioneer family, George and Lurana Guye, was born in Madison county, Iowa, June 28, 1850.

In his youth he attended the public school in Union township, where his parents resided. Having completed the course then offered in the grade school, he attended normal school for a short time, where, by unusual perseverance and effort, he acquired the training necessary to fit himself for a teacher. He then taught school for a number of years, during which time he not only was a successful teacher, but by utilizing his spare time, he managed to acquire a broad education for himself. He then entered business in Winterset, remaining there for a few years, later spending a couple of years in the Northwest.

Having returned he was united in marriage to Margaret Duff, daughter of Arthur Duff, of Jefferson township in 1893. They immediately started farming upon the farm in Jefferson township, where they have since constantly resided, until the time of his death, March 21, 1930, at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 21 days.

To this union were born two sons, Clyde Victor and Harold William, who, together with their mother survive him. His passing leaves but one sister, Mrs. Elvia M. Gillespie, of Jackson township, and a brother, C. L. Guye, as the only surviving member of Madison county's oldest pioneer family.

In 1873 he affiliated himself with the Evening Star Lodge No. 43 of Winterset, and eventually completed the degrees leading to the Mystic Shrine, of which he was a member. While he never made a public profession of his Christian faith, yet, by his clear thinking, clean living, his consideration of others, his courage when convinced of the right, regardless of public sentiment, and his honesty and conservativeness in all his dealings, surely exemplify a Christian gentleman.

Funeral services were held at Tidrick's funeral home, Sunday, March 23, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. W. C. Porter. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
