VELMA OLSON, Winterset

Velma Luella Olson, 84, of Winterset died of a stroke May 17, 2002, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 20, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Velma Olson was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Creston to Niels Thomsen and Marie Elizabeth (Mathiesen) Mikkelsen. On Oct. 28, 1939, she married Lowell L. Olson in Council Bluffs. A resident of Winterset for 57 years, Velma, a homemaker, also had been a clerk at Ben Franklin and Harrison's. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, five brothers and five sisters.

She is survived by two sons, Jim Olson (wife Pamm) of Winterset and Keith Olson (wife Sheryl) of Jonesboro, Ga.; two daughters, Claudia Corbett (husband Dick) of Waukee and Karla Haynes (husband Ray) of Urbandale; three sisters, Nellie Herzog of Bella Vista, Ark., Francis Burch of Davenport and Alice Spriggs of Creston; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
