LOWELL 'OLE' OLSON, Winterset

Lowell 'Ole' Lewis Olson, 84, of Winterset, died of a respiratory ailment Aug. 11, 1997 at Care Center North in Winterset. Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Pastor Jon Gaul will officiate the services and burial will be at the Winterset Cemetery.

Fraternal graveside services will be conducted by I.O.O.F. Lodge #136 of Winterset. Visitation will be today, Wednesday from noon until 8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.

He was born in Cromwell on Aug. 25, 1912 to Lloyd and Jennie (Jennings) Olson. He married Velma Mikkelsen on Oct. 28, 1939 at Council Bluffs. He had owned his own welding shop and had been an insurance salesman and real estate agent before retirement. He had been a resident of Madison County since 1946, having come from the state of Washington where he had worked in the Navy Yards during Wrld War II. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge; a 30-year member of the Winterset Fire Department; a former city council member, one of the first members of the Planning and Zoning Commission; and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. He was noted for playing a key roll in the installation and finish work of the stainless canopy, ball and spire atop the Madison County Courthouse; was past president of Winterset Rotary Club; Noble Grand of the Winterset Odd Fellows; Board of Directors of the Winterset Development Corp.; had organized and coached the Winterset Little League and Winterset Pony League; was named the Husky Booster Fan of the Year, and was three times president of the Winterset Chamber of Commerce. Olson anonymously touched thousands of lives over three decades of portraying Santa Claus during the Christmas season in the Winterset area. He was also the first recipient of the coveted Citizen of the Year award in 1979.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.

Surviving relatives include his wife Velma, of Winterset; two sons, Jim Olson and wife Pamm of Winterset and Keith Olson and wife Sheryl of Jonesboro, Ga.; two daughters Claudia Corbett and husband Richard of Waukee and Karla Gorman of Urbandale; one brother, Norris Olson of Santa Barbara, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
