DEATH OF MRS. STANFIELD

Mrs. Jane Stanfield died last Saturday, July 5th, about noon from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy. Mrs. Stanfield has resided in Winterset since 1875 and had lived in the Farmers' hotel, formerly known as the Stanfield House, since 1878. She was stricken with apoplexy abut nine in the morning, and lived only a couple of hours. She leaves one son, Will Stanfield.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church on July 7th, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton. Burial was made at Booneville.

Mrs. Stanfield -

Mahala Jane Stanfield, daughter of John W. and Elsa Wilkin, was born in Millersburg, Ohio April 13, 1844.

The family soon came to Polk county, Iowa and lived in Des Moines where Greenwood Park now is located. They then moved to Booneville in Dallas county, when Mrs. Stanfield was only 12 years of age.

She was married to Joseph Keckley in 1860. Mr. Keckley lived only a few months. She was afterward married to George Stanfield on Dec. 7, 1865. They moved to Warren county locating where Martensdale now stands. They then moved to Jewel City, Kans. where the Indians and buffalo were almost their only neighbors. After four years their crops were destroyed by grasshoppers and they came to Winterset in 1876. In 1878 they moved to the home which became known as the Stanfield house, where her home has been since.

They managed the hotel for many years and no one will know how many Aunt Jane mothered during her 45 years of residence in the place. There probably never was a day that she did not care for some erring, homeless or hopeless one. Her open door and her love and sympathy gave many a hopeless one the courage to begin life anew.

There were two children born to her, Lucretia, who died when only three years old and her son William who has been making his home with her. Mr. Stanfield died in 1915.

She has long been a faithful member of the Winterset Methodist Episcopal church and continued active in the church and Sunday school until her death.

She leaves besides her son, three sisters, Mrs. Ora Holmes, of Fort Morgan, Colo.; Mrs. Amanda Austin, of Lincoln, Nebr.; Mrs. Mary Brown, of Salt Lake City, Utah.

She has gone home to hear her Savior's 'Well done, good and faithful servant .............' (rest of line unreadable)

The funeral was held at the M.E. church July 7th at 2 p.m. conducted by pastor, D. J. Stenton. The burial was by the side of her husband at Booneville.
