Merle M. Mercer, Winterset

Merle M. Mercer, 66, of Winterset died Aug. 18, 2005 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, where Pastors John Shaull and Scott O'Connor will officiate. Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24 at Ochiltree Funeral Service, where the family will be present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m.

Merle was born Nov. 5, 1938 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Glen and Mary (Sowder) Mercer. He was a 1957 graduate of Winterset High School and was a member of the Winterset Alumni Association. He was active in many school activities including sports and class plays and was junior class president and co-captain of the football team. He also served in the Air National Guard for several years and attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and Parsons College in Fairfield where he took general studies and participated in football. Merle worked general construction off and on for several years. He also worked in tool sales for Ace Air Tools in Des Moines and most recently at O'Reilly Auto Parts in Winterset.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew. Survivors include a sister, Lilliam Williams and husband Harold of Indianola; a brother, Carl Mercer of Winterset; one nephew; one niece; five great nieces; and two great nephews.
