Harold Menke, Winterset

Harold M. Menke, 87, of Winterset, died Nov. 22, 1995 of a heart ailment at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. The Rev. Don Frank officiated the funeral services Nov. 27 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. The body was cremated.

He was born on Nov. 21, 1908 in Lac Qui Parle County, Minn., to Fred C. and Fredricka A. (Werner) Menke. He married Wilma Carol Gloege on March 21, 1933 in Lac Qui Parle County, Minn. He was a retired teacher of the Winterset Community School, having taught from 1944-1974. He was a resident of Winterset for 51 years and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. He was a past member of the National Education Assoc.; Iowa State Education Assoc.; Winterset Art Center; Winterset Lions Club; Knights of Pythias Lodge 48; Winterset Zoning Board; West Central Health Environmental Education.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers; and two sisters.

Surviving relatives include one son, Richard H. Menke of Long Grove; two daughters, Joan C. Robinson of Paonia, Colo., and Janith G. Harpole of Cheyene, WY.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, the Winterset Art Center or the Madison County Historical Society.
