Nora Ellen Martin, St. Charles

Nora Ellen Martin, 96, of St. Charles, died of a respiratory ailment Nov. 27, 1997 at the Winterset Care Center North. Funeral services were Dec. 1 at the St. Charles Parish Church with the Rev. Ed Poston officiating. Burial followed at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola.

She was born in Indianola on Dec. 13, 1900 to G. G. and Mary (Chumbley) Amos. She was educated in Indianola Schools. On May 25, 1918, she married Samuel Wallace Martin in Indianola, and they moved to St.Charles in 1924. She was a homemaker, a member of the St. Charles Parish Church and the Women United at the St. Charles Parish Church and a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one son.

Surviving relatives include two sons, Sam Martin and wife Susie Kathryn of St. Charles, Ramon W. Martin and wife Anna Marie of Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Amos of Indianola, Marcella Martin of Bremerton, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Charles Parish Church or the St. Charles Pumper Truck.

NORA E. MARTIN

Nora Ellen Martin, daughter of G. G. and Mary Chumbley Amos, was born Dec. 13, 1900, at Indianola and died Nov. 27, 1997, at Winterset Care Center North. She was 96.

She attended country school near Indianola and graduated from Indianola High School. She married Samuel Wallace Martin on May 25, 1918, at Indianola and they became the parents of three sons, Samuel Amos, Ramon Wallace and Max Meredith who died at age 2.

The family moved in 1924 to the original Martin Century Farm near St. Charles. Mrs. Martin enjoyed life on the farm. She worked in the garden and loved growing lowers. She was a life-time partner with her husband in farming and in carpentry.

She was a member of the St. Charles Parish Church, the United Women church group in St. Charles and was a 50-year member of Model Chapter No. 174 Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Sam in 1976; her son, Max in 1924; a great-grandson, Nathaniel; two brothers, Charles and Howard Amos and a sister, Nellie Hutchcroft.

Mrs. Martin is survived by two sons, Sam Martin and his wife, Susie Kathryn Martin, of St. Charles and Ramon W. Martin and his wife Anna Marie Martin, of Mesa, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in law; Mildred Amos of Indianola and Marcella Martin of Bremerton, Wash.; as number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Services for Mrs. Martin were at 10 a.m. Dec. 1 at the St. Charles Parish Church, the Rev. Ed Poston officiating. Organist Anne Johnson played the hymn, In the Garden.

Casket bearers were Carroll Hayden, Herschel Martin, Tim Busby, Sam Martin III, Gary Martin Clay Hayden. Interment was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola.

Arrangements were by Kale Funeral Homes of Osceola and Truro.
