Mrs. Minta Martin, a former resident of Macksburg, died Saturday, March 14, at Baltimore, Md. She was 89 years of age.
Mrs. Martin was the mother of Glenn L. Martin, who was one of the pioneers of the aviation industry in the United States, and who now is one of the nation's largest producers of military aircraft.
She was the former Florence Arminta DeLong, born Jan. 11, 1864, in Clarke county. She married Clarence Y. Martin in 1882. During their early married life they lived at Macksburg, where her son, Glenn, was born. From Macksburg, they moved to Liberal, Kansas, and later to Santa Ana, Calif. Her husband died in 1935.
In 1912 Mrs. Martin became one of the first women to fly, in a plane built and piloted by her son.
