Charles Sumner Mapes Sr., a lifetime resident of Winterset, died at Madison County Memorial Hospital on Jan. 7. He was 85 years of age.

Mr. Mapes was born on Nov. 17, 1895, the son of Charles Sumner and Amanda Hutchinson Mapes of Winterset. In 1929 he married Clara Moore in Winterset.

A retired farmer, Mr. Mapes was a member of the Farm Bureau, the American Angus Association and the Early Chapel of the Disciples of Christ.

Among his survivors are his wife; a son, Charles Jr. of Pella; two sisters, Mildred Rohrer of Des Moines, Ethel Long of Urbandale; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 9 at Collins Funeral Home. Burial was at the Penn Center with the Rev. William Dilsaver officiating.
