MARJORIE EVELYN GOMEZ, Earlham

Marjorie Evelyn Gomez, 83, passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa, from complications of liver failure.

Marjorie was born June 4, 1923, in Menlo, Iowa, to Francis and Loma (Harkins) Miller. She was raised in the Menlo area and moved to Earlham in 1942. She was united in marriage to Elias “Ike” Gomez on Oct. 3, 1942. To this union 19 children were born. Some of her highlights were celebrating their 50th anniversary in 1992 and her 80th birthday party.

Marjorie was a homemaker and for 20 years was self-employed through Mid-Continent Bottlers. She lived an active life and enjoyed socializing with many friends and family through telephone conversations and her passion of letter writing.

She enjoyed farm life and attending various auctions, county fairs and going on trips. Marjorie looked forward to the annual hog roast and family get-togethers. Her hobbies included reading, church functions, cattle, border collie dogs and flowers.

She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, an officer of Earlham, Stuart and Redfield saddle clubs and the Dallas and Madison County Retarded Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ike; one son, James Gomez; two grandsons, Brian Gomez and Thomas Wright; and her parents, Francis and Loma Miller.

Marjorie is survived by her 10 sons, David and wife Carol of Shell Rock, Thomas of Dexter, Robert and wife Melinda of Ottumwa, Richard and wife Jean of Wellsville, Kan., Larry and wife Sue of LaFeria, Texas, Timothy and wife Joanie of Lorimor, Patrick of Earlham, William and companion Kathy Phippen of Earlham, Dennis and wife Sheryl of Pauls Valley, Okla., Jack and wife Diana of Earlham; eight daughters, Jean Moll and husband Terry of Des Moines, Mary Belding and husband Lloyd of Pratt, Kan., Catherine Callahan and husband Roger of Earlham, Janet Taylor and husband Greg of Earlham, Cindy Boucher and husband Allen of Des Moines, Margaret Tiernan and husband Eric of Stuart, Joyce Rasmussen and husband David of Jefferson, and Barbara Boss and husband David of Stuart; 47 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Keith Miller and wife Pat of Stuart and Dean Miller of Fontanelle; a sister, Doris Moss and husband Billy of Vero Beach, Fla.; an aunt, Opal Eichor of Guthrie Center, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
