MRS. JOHN MCNAMARA DIES

Prominent Club Woman Succumbs After Extended Illness

Mrs. John McNamara, life long resident of Winterset and Madison county, died at her home on West Court avenue, Tuesday afternoon, February 28th after an extended illness. Mrs. McNamara had a major operation at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines last September. She recovered from this and was able to return to her home in Winterset in November. During December and the early part of January she could be down town but she developed the flu and other complications soon afterwards, and her condition has been serious for some time.

Mrs. McNamara was the former Miss Agnes Vaughan. She was born in this county, January 23, 1864. On April 9, 1888, she was married to John McNamara. They went to housekeeping on a farm in Union township, and resided there until they moved to their present home in 1920. They were the parents of five children, who with the husband survive her; Richard and Eugene of Winterset, Charles of Villa Park, Illinois, Mrs. W. S. Phillips of Des Moines and Mrs. R. E. Burch of Davenport.

Mrs. McNamara was not only a good mother, but was active in the affairs of her community. She took an especial interest in Red Cross work during the World War and also in the organization of the local group of the American Legion Auxiliary. She served as president in 1920 and again in 1930. She was president of the Madison county war club in 1920 and president of the City Federation of Women's clubs in 1924. She was awarded certificate of war service in 1919 and in 1920 was county chairman of the home demonstration work. Other organizations to which she belonged were the Women's club, Leizure Hour club, W.R.C. and Garden club. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian church of Winterset.

Mrs. McNamara also enjoyed writing poetry and short stories, and the last summer was honored by having a poem published in the anthology compiled by the state federation, entitled Silk of Corn.

Her pastor, the Rev. R. C. Cully will conduct her funeral service at the church this morning, at 10 o'clock and burial will be in the Winterset cemetery. The members of the Auxiliary and the Woman's Relief Corps are attending the services in a group.
