The Rev. Sylvester Earl Travis, 94, of Fort Scott, Kan., died Sept. 21, 2006 at the Medicalodge of Fort Scott.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 25, at Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel in Fort Scott with Pastor Greg Stine and the Rev. Roy Miller officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery.
Sylvester Travis was born July 28, 1912 in East Peru to Martin Beatty and Nellie Francis (Hoover) Travis II. His marriage to Evelyn Lorraine Brooker-Finch took place Feb. 22, 1953 in Winterset. Sylvester was employed by Union State Bank of Winterset for 10 years. On Feb. 12, 1951, he was publicly ordained in the ministry by the Grace Baptist Church of Winterset. He ministered in churches throughout Iowa, Missouri and Illinois. His last full-time pastorate was Bethel Community Church in Fort Scott, Kan., where he retired in 1983. Following retirement, he continued as an interim pastor for churches in Missouri for 10 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Mark Allen Travis.
He is survived by two daughters, Janet Ruth Miller of Lincoln, Neb., and Shirley Brooker Pitman of Sunrise Beach, Mo.; four sons, Richard Brooker of Cedarville, Ohio, William Brooker of Cedar Rapids, Timothy Travis of Fort Scott, Kan., and Paul Travis of Roeland Park, Kan.; one sister, Wilma Carter of Winterset; and 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
