JOSEPH MCDONALD DIES AT 81 YEARS

Spent Life as Merchant and Farmer in Iowa and North Dakota

Joseph A. McDonald of Winterset, a retired Madison county farmer, died Thursday, Feb. 10, at Memorial hospital in Winterset. He was 81 years of age.

Mr. McDonald was born in this county May 15, 1884, a son of Robert F. and Leah Ruth McDonald. Most of his life was spent here. He graduated from Winterset High school, attended business college in Des Moines, and worked in a hardware store in Creston, then moved to Leonard, N.Dak., where he farmed for several years. Returning to Iowa he operated the general store at Van Meter, but again moved back to North Dakota, where he farmed until 1941. In that year he returned to Madison county again, and farmed here until 1959 when he retired and moved into Winterset.

He was married in 1907 to Anna Fay Stark. Her death occurred in 1956. Two sons, also preceded him in death, Ira J., in infancy, and Dean S. in 1959.

He was a member of the First Methodist church of Winterset.

Surviving are one son, Lucien H. McDonald of Sheridan, Wyo., four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the Collins Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. E. K. Burham, pastor of the First Methodist church. Burial was made in the Chase-McDonald cemetery.
