S. M. HAMILTON DIED HERE LAST FRIDAY

Death Came Suddenly to Widely-Known Local Business Man

S. M. Hamilton, one of Winterset's most widely-known business men for 40 years, died suddenly last Friday morning. His death was caused by a stroke of apoplexy. He was 67 years of age.

Seresto Medellen Hamilton, was known familiarly in this community as Dell Hamilton. He was born on Nov. 22, 1873 in Walnut township, the son of Joseph C. W. Hamilton and Mary Draper Hamilton. He was one of a family of 11 children, all but one of whom have preceded him in death.

After attending the rural schools of Madison county he attended Highland Park college, and Drake University in Des Moines, teaching between attendance there in order to finance his education. He was graduated from Drake University's law school and received his certificate to practice in 1898.

In 1902 he became associate with his brother, Joseph Hamilton, in the real estate firm of Hamilton Brothers, and in the banking business here. With the exception of a few years, their business association had continued until the present time.

Mr. Hamilton was married, on Dec. 6, 1915, to Carrie Alice Burke of Winterset.

Aside from a year in New Mexico and a year in northwest Iowa, Mr. Hamilton spent his entire life in Madison county.

Near surviving relatives are his wife; and his brother, Joe Hamilton, both of Winterset.

Funeral services were held here Sunday from Anderson's home for funerals, in charge of the Rev. W. A. Samp, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Frank and Clair Hamilton, Beryl and Ralph Farlow, Jr., and Earnest and Edward Kessler.

Coordinator's note: His first name is spelled "Sceresto" on his gravestone and his WWI Draft Registration. It is "Scersto" in the Winterset News obituary. It is "Seresto" in this obituary, his Iowa Death Certificate, and the 1900 census. There are yet other variations in other vital records. There is no clear evidence upon which to make a decision as to which one is correct.
