Mrs. Helene W. Burcombe, 76, widow of the late George T. Burcombe, and a former resident of the Penn Center community, died of a stroke January 30, 1954, at her home in Des Moines.
Mrs. Burcombe was born in Germany in 1877 and came to Des Moines at the age of six with her parents. She was united in marriage to George T. Burcombe in 1904. The Burcombe family moved to the Penn Center community in 1915 and made their home there for several years. Mr. Burcombe preceded his wife in death in November 1938.
Mrs. Burcombe was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church of Des Moines. She was also a member of Des Moines Chapter No. 89 Order of the Eastern Star, Mount Olivet White Shrine No. 2, the Half-Century Birthday Club, and was a charter member of the Star Club, and auxiliary of the Des Moines Police Burial and Protective Association.
Services were held February 2, 1954 in Des Moines with burial at Penn Center cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Mildred and Marjorie Burcombe of Des Moines; two sons, Ralph of Jackson, Mississippi, and George, of Long Beach, California; five grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Dietz, Mrs. Bertha Brewer and Mrs. Mary Brothers all of Des Moines and one brother, Frederick Sternberg of Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Tuesday in Des Moines at 11 o’clock for Mrs. Helen Burcombe, formerly of this community. Burial was at the Penn Center cemetery Tuesday afternoon at one o’clock with short graveside services. Mrs. Burcombe had been ill for a long time. She suffered two strokes a week ago and never regained consciousness.
