October 1939

Emma H. Butler, eldest child of William H. and Deborah Kilbourne Flemming was born in Madison county, Iowa, January 15, 1860 and died at her home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, October 15, 1939, at the age of 79 years and nine months.

In the early 70’s she was united in marriage with Isaac S. Butler from Monmouth, Illinois. They lived near Earlham, Iowa, until 1885 when they moved westward to a homestead near Albion, Nebraska, in Boone county, where they reared and educated their children. In later years she has made her home at Tekamah, Nebraska, Council Bluffs and Coin, Iowa.

In her going she leaves four children, Mrs. Alta Carper and Pearley R. Butler of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs. E W Devore of St. Edward, Nebraska, and Mrs. Andrew Patience of Coin, Iowa. (One son Ivan Butler preceded his mother in death). Seventeen grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Junkin and Mrs. Nellie Hill of Earlham; and three brothers, Ed Flemming of Jacksonville, Oregon; Marion Flemming of Earlham; and John Flemming of Des Moines.

Mrs. Butler was raised in the Presbyterian church but later years the Methodist church was near her and her membership was placed in it where she could attend. At the time of her death it was in St. Edward Nebraska. She was one of those many loyal devoted pioneers who felt the extreme necessity of the church and the home, and she would ride miles seated on a board in a farm wagon to get to the place of worship. May God keep alive that spirit in the hearts of all today.

Funeral services were conducted from the Tyler-Winslow Mortuary in Council bluffs, Iowa, Tuesday, October 17 at 2 o’clock by the Rev. Robt. M. Peters of the Epworth Methodist church. Music was furnished by Mrs. Lawrence Brownell accompanied by Mrs. R. M. Peters.

Funeral services were conducted from the Presbyterian church on Wednesday afternoon by the pastor, the Rev. S. R. Overholser and the body laid to rest by the side of her son in the Earlham Cemetery.
