ALEXANDER BLACK OF ST. CHARLES IS DEAD

Life-Long Resident of That Community Succumbed Sunday

St. Charles--(Special)--Alexander Black died at his home in St. Charles Sunday after a short illness. He was 72 years old.

Mr. Black was one of a family of 13 children, and was born May 31, 1868, on the old Black homestead south of St. Charles, where Jessie Crawford now lives. He spent his entire life in this community.

He was married to Miss Bessie Collie on Dec. 19, 1889. They were the parents of four children. The wife and mother died in 1928. Since then Mr. Black had made his home with one of the daughters, Mrs. Laura Torrence.

Mr. Black leaves three sons, in addition to the daughter. They are Loyd, Frank, Jr., and Fred Black, all of St. Charles. He also leaves seven grandchildren, one great grandchild, two sisters and a brother.

Funeral services were held from the St. Charles Methodist church Tuesday, and burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

STROKE FATAL TO ALEX BLACK

Member of Pioneer Family Of Madison County. Four Children Survive

Alexander Black, a life long resident of St. Charles and the city, died Sunday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Melvin Torrence. About a week ago he suffered a heart attack and Saturday morning was found in bed unconscious from a stroke.

His parents, George and Sarah White Black, were early settlers of Madison county, coming in the fall of 1852, and lived on a farm about two miles south of St. Charles were Alexander was born 72 years ago.

He was married to Miss Bessie Colley to whom four children were born: Loyd, Ray, Fren and Laura. Mrs. Black died Jan. 6, 1928. Since that time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. J. M. Torrence in St. Charles.

He is survived by the four children above mentioned, all living near St. Charles and many grandchildren. One brother, Franklin of St. Charles; two sisters, Mrs. Ann Collins of St. Charles and Mrs. Steele of Kansas.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Methodist church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. L. M. Kirby. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
