Ella Josie Benson, daughter of Myria and Jasper Benson, was born in Dallas county November 29, 1874. She died in the Madison Memorial hospital, Winterset, on March 3, 1961 at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 7 days.
She was married to Charles Vernon Brown who preceded her in death. To this union two children were born – a son, Clair, who died at the age of two, and a daughter, Nellie.
Josie joined the Earlham Methodist Church in 1910. She was a loyal worker in the church, teaching a church school class and taking active leadership in the mission program and other phases of church life. She attended services as long as she could struggle to the church door.
Preceding her in death are her parents, three sisters, Anna Pearson, Eva Morgan and Jane King, and one brother Will Benson. Surviving her are her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Miller of Springfield, Missouri, one granddaughter Jean, a brother C. E. Benson of Earlham, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held for E. Josie Brown at the Earlham Methodist church on Monday, March 6, 1961. Rev. Stephen Cree officiated. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.
