Farm Tractor Fatality

John C. McClain, well-known farmer living north of Lorimor, was killed last Thursday afternoon when the tractor he was operating over-turned on him.

MClain was spreading fertilizer in a pasture when the accident occurred. The tractor upset, crushing him underneath. When he did not return to the house that evening, his wife searched the farm for him, but was unable to find him. The next morning she called their son-in-law, Jerry McKeever, and he found the accident scene about 7:45 a.m. Friday. (d: 2-24-1972)

This was the first farm accident fatality of the year in Madison county.

Mr. McClain was 56 years of age. A son of Clarence and Fern McClain, he was born Jan. 1, 1916 in Boone county. He was educated in the Boone schools, and was married April 5, 1939, at Winterset to Hazel G. Petersen. He had lived on the farm northeast of Lorimor the last 14 years.

He was a member of the Barney Christian church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hazel McClain; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry McKeever of near Peru; a granddaughter; and his mother, Mrs. Fern McClain of Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday from the First United Methodist church in Lorimor, with the Rev. Eldon Jandebeur, pastor of the First Christian church of Winterset, officiating. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
