AUNT KATE JOHNSON

Catherine M. Bales, daughter of Jacob and Ruth Bales, was born near New Market, Eastern Tenn. October 19, 1845 and departed this life August 1, 1936.

Hers was a sturdy Quaker heritage. All of her parents and grandparents were members of the Society of Friends, and were faithful in their duties to both the church and the state. She often praised God for the care and teachings given her by her parents and by others which led her in early childhood to accept Jesus as her savior.

Because of the stressing times of 1860 her parents thought it best to live in a free state, so they migrated to Kansas, stopping at various places and meetings, finally settling near Emporia but after a year, moved to Toledo, Kansas.

It was in this meeting on July 28, 1867 she and Charlie A. Johnson were united in marriage according to the custom of Friends. Together for forty years they shared the responsibilities of life through its joys and its tears until the husband and father was called to lay his burdens down.

Two daughters were born to them, Minnie Alma and Lelia Evelyn. Minne (Minnie) Alma passed to her reward in early womanhood. Lelia Evelyn with who she made her home for the past ten years tenderly cared for and watched over her during her last lingering illness until the summon came.

In 1874, Aunt Kate with her husband and family came to Earlham where for over sixty years she was a member of Earlham Friends Meeting being at the time of her death its oldest member.

She leaves to mourn her passing, one daughter, Mrs. Lelia Conrad of Earlham, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and one brother, David Bales of Wichita, Kansas, who is 93 years old, besides mny (many) other relatives and hosts of friends.
