WINEMA P. JOHNSON

Winema Pemberton Johnson, daughter of Henry C. Pemberton and Beulah Jackson Pemberton was born in Marshall County, Iowa on February 27, 1880. Her father at the time was a missionary among the Osage Indians in Indian Territory.

Winema spent the first years on a farm with her four brothers; Elmer, Addison, George, and Frank; and three sisters: Ruth, Josilee and Maurine, all of whom have preceded her in death. At the age of ten years, the family moved to Richland, Iowa as pastors, then they went to West Branch where her mother died. Her father then moved to New Sharon as pastor. It was there in 18___ she graduated from high school. In 1900 she attended Penn College at Oskaloosa. She taught school for two years. In the summer of 1903, she with sister Josilee, spent the summer in Oregon visiting uncles, aunts and cousins. She was a birthright member of the Friends church of Lynnville until 1926 when she moved to New Virginia and joined the Methodist church where she was a very active member until her health failed.

October 21, 1903, she was married to Jervis C. Johnson in Oskaloosa, by Aisalem Rosen burger, president of Penn College. The rest of her married life was spent on farms in Jasper and Warren counties. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1953 at the Leland Johnson home in New Virginia.

Being left alone by the death of her husband Jervis in September 1959, she moved to Earlham in the home of a cousin, Alice Johnson. In July 1969 she moved to Des Moines to the Sunnycrest Home where she made her home. After a short illness she departed this life November 19, 1970.

She leaves to mourn her loss three sons; Bryon and wife Helen of Des Moines, Max and wife Catherine of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Richard and wife Grace of Spokane, Missouri; ten grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, also one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leland and Ruth Johnson of New Virginia.

She was truly a mother in every sense of the word, her daughters-in-law were blessed in having this mother-in-law as she could surely be called.

She was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.

Note: Year of high school graduation unreadable in obituary.
