SYLVA IOLA JOHNSON

Sylva Iola Johnson, first-born of David and Junie Johnson, came to their happy home, near Richland, in Jefferson county, Iowa, on September 10, 1897. Earthly life ceased for her at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, during the early hours of the morning, on October 21, 1953, when she had reached the age of 56 years, one month, and 11 days.

When Sylva was seven months old the family moved to Bear Creek community, in which locality her home has been since that time; also where she has maintained her membership in the Friends church throughout the years.

Converted in early childhood and reared in a home where daily Bible reading, prayer, and church activities were a part of their lives-that too became the pattern of her life.

She attended Bear Creek school, graduated from the Earlham High school, and from Penn College, Following that, she taught school for two years, then came home to take over the responbilities of the household for her family.

For some time she served as a 4-H Club leader, which she enjoyed very much.

Her most intense interest was in missionaries and their fields of labor, and she brought to the activities of the Woman’s Missionary Society an eager zest in the work. She delighted to correspond with missionaries, and was pleased when she chould (could) do something special for them.

Always ambitious beyond her strength to perform, she knew for many years of her life what it meant to combat physical weaknesses in order to accomplish what she desired to do.

The sympathy of the community is extended to the father, and brother, Russell, at her home to her sister, Mrs. S. C. Welch, who has cared for her in her last illness, and her brother, Leevern and family of Eugene, Oregon. Many other relatives and friends are sad at her passing.

Note: Burial in Bear Creek Cemetery, Dallas Co., Iowa
