Earlham, IowaALLEN R. OSBORN
Allen R. Osborn, 60, of R. 3, Ames, Iowa, died Monday, May 29, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center of a heart attack.
He was born in Winchester, Indiana, to Edgar and Orpha Miller Osborn. After high school he worked at farming and the grocery business until 1941, when he joined the Civilian Public Service as a conscientious objector. He was assigned to work at Civilian Public Service camps located at Merom, Indiana and at Ames, Iowa.
While in Ames he met Bertha Standing of Earlham, and they were married on August 22, 1944 at Earlham. Allen worked for a time with the Jasper County Soil Conservation Service and later engaged in farming and dairying for five years in the Earlham community.
In 1955 he moved his family to Ames to work in agronomy at Iowa State College, and at the time of his death he was farm superintendent for North America Plant Breeders near Ames. He was active both in the Earlham Bear Creek Conservative Friends Meeting and in the Ames Friends Meeting.
Survivors include his wife Bertha; two daughters, Nancy Osborn of Ames and Joyce Osborn of Iowa City; a son, Steve Osborn of Ames; and a sister, Jean Jarrett of Kendallville, Indiana.
