Death Of ARCHIE WELCH

On Christmas day, the sad news of the death of Archie Welch, which occurred on that day, reached Winterset. Archie was born in Knoxville in 1870 and came with his parents to Winterset in 1882. He was a bright boy and graduated from the Winterset High School. Soon after his graduation, he went to work in his father's store. He was married to a lady from Galva, Ill. in 1890, while living here, and the young couple went to housekeeping here.

About twelve years ago, the Welch's went to Waterloo and engaged in business there. After a few years, the father went to California, and Archie engaged in the wholesale business in Cedar Rapids. The firm was called Welch, Cook Co., which dealt in dry good and notions. It also manufactured several lines, among which were the Welch overalls.

About four years ago, Mr. Welch failed in health, and for a time was in a critical condition; he afterward rallied, but two months ago had a relapse and was taken to the Presbyterian hospital in Chicago where he died as before stated

The remains were taken to Cedar Rapids and the funeral occurred there last Saturday. His father, D. T. Welch, was with him during the last days of his sickness and at the time of his death.

DEATH CLAIMED YOUNG MERCHANT

A. M. WELCH HAD BEEN ILL THREE YEARS

Well Known in Waterloo Where He Had Dry Goods Store

Cedar Rapids Gazette, Dec. 26: To the relatives and countless numbers of friends of a. A. M. Welch, president of the Welch-Cook company of this city, Christmas Day brought sorrow instead of joy. Death finally conquered in a brave fight which lasted over a period of three years. He passed away in the Presbyterian hospital in Chicago as Christmas Day was dawning. His father was with him when he died. Mr. Welch was 45 years of age.

For over three years he had been a sufferer, much of this time being spent in a hospital. Physicians pronounced his trouble leukemia – a hard disease to conquer but a year ago his improvement was so pronounced that his physicians and friends thought he had won the battle. He came to Cedar Rapids three months ago hoping to be able to resume charge of his business but a related disease developed and he was obliged to return to the Chicago hospital. He became gradually worse until the end.

Mr. Welch was born in Knoxville, Ia., in October, 1868, and later lived in Winterset where his father established a business. He attended school at Lake Park, Ill., and engaged in the retail dry goods business in Waterloo, which was very successful. From there he was induced to come to Cedar Rapids by the directors of the J. C. Cook wholesale dry goods company which was reorganized into the Welch-Cook company.

While attending school at Lake Park, Ill., Mr. Welch met Miss Alice M. Brownlee, who became his wife November 19, 1890. She survives him with two children, Elizabeth, aged 16, and David, aged 10 years. When it became known that his condition was serious Mrs. Welch and the two children gave up the fine home which had been built at Second avenue Nineteenth street and went to Evanston to live to be near him. They returned to the city last fall with Mr. Welch to permit the children to enter the Cedar Rapids schools. Mr. Welch's mother passed away several years ago but his father survives.

The body was brought to Cedar Rapids at 5:40 o'clock yesterday morning and taken to the home at 1608 Sixth avenue.

The funeral was held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock in the First Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. Dr. Burkhalter, of whose church Mr. Welch was a sincere and faithful member. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in a lot chosen by Mr. Welch as his final resting place.
