EARL H. JOHNSTON DIED ON THURSDAY

West Side Baker Here for Many Years Had Been in Failing Health

Earl H. Johnston, a well-known Winterset business man for many years, died at the Winterset hospital last Thursday after an extended illness. He was 54 years of age.

Mr. Johnston was a native of Stuart, where he was born Sept. 4, 1889, the son of John M. and Mary A. Johnston. As a young man he entered the U.S. army during World War I, and served in France as a quartermaster sergeant.

Following the war he came to Winterset and established the bakery on the west side of the square, which he operated for about 20 years.

He was married June 27, 1922, to Gladys L. Gardner. They were the parents of two sons, Donald Earl, now aged 13, and James Arnold, now aged 12.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge and the Christian church at Stuart.

In addition to his wife and the two sons, he is survived by four brothers, Frank Johnston of Atlantic, Clarence Johnston of Perry, Will Johnston of Des Moines, and Robert Johnston of Newton; and two sisters, Mrs. Addie Olson of Des Moines, and Mrs. Mamie Kennedy of Guthrie Center.

Funeral services were held here Saturday from the Anderson Funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Tom Foglesong, pastor of the Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Stuart cemetery.
