CHARLES H. MENDENHALL

Charles Hadley Mendenhall, son of Lloyd and Louise (Hammond) Mendenhall, was born November 8, 1922 at the Mendenhall homestead in the Bear Creek community northwest of Earlham, Iowa. He passed from this life on August 25, 2006 at the Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 83 years.

When he was less than six years old, Charles suffered the loss by death of his mother, Louise. His grandparents, John and Mira Mendenhall, and later his step-mother, Orpha (Hadley) Mendenhall, then shared in his care. He also had the support of his older brother, Herschel.

Charles received his elementary education at the local Bear Creek School and graduated from the Earlham High School with the Class of 1940. He attended William Penn College at Oskaloosa, Iowa for two years before returning to the Bear Creek area to engage in farming.

On February 28, 1948 Charles was united in marriage with Martha Coulter, a union which was to endure for more than 58 years.

In May 1956 Charles began employment with the Woodford Company in Des Moines, but Charles and Martha continued to reside in the Bear Creek community. They moved back from a nearby farm to the homestead where he was born and continued to live there until shortly before his death.

Charles was a very faithful member of the Bear Creek Friends Church. For a number years he was engaged in transporting children from a nearby town to the Bear Creek Sunday School.

Besides his wife, Martha, Charles leaves immediate family members including his daughter Linda Adkins and her husband Richard Adkins of Dexter, Iowa, also his daughter Karen Mendenhall of Dexter. There is one grandson, Benjamin Adkins of Waukee, Iowa. There are also other relatives and many friends, all of whom remember his years among us with appreciation and thankfulness.
