Dale Moon Dies At Harlan

Dale Osborn Moon, son of Ella Evans and Mark M. Moon, was born May 13, 1907 at Omaha, Nebraska, and died at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan on January 30, 1980 at the age of 72 years. Dale was raised and educated in the Omaha public schools. In 1932 he moved to Harlan as an employee of Wiigs Variety Store. On October 11, 1934 he was united in marriage to Alice Sheeley and to this union two sons were born.

In 1935 he became a department manager of Sears in Omaha. During World War II, Dale managed a Ben Franklin Variety Store in Winterset and in 1946 Dale and Alice opened Moon’s Variety Store in Beresford, South Dakota. In 1952, they purchased the Wiigs Variety Store in Harlan and operated it as Moon’s Variety Store until 1980, when Dale retired because of ill health. He also founded the Mode-O-Day Store in Winterset.

Dale and his twin brother Darold were two of the first eagle scouts in Omaha. Dale was also Master Councellor(Counselor) of the Omaha Chapter of DeMolay. Member of the Winterset Lions Club, Winterset and Beresford Masonic Lodges, past president of the Harlan Chamber of Commerce, past member of Harlan Kiwanis Club and was currently active in the Congregational Church Choir, Parion Lodge No. 321 in Harlan, Sioux City Consistory, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple of Sioux City and the Harlan Shrine Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Charles, Dexter, and twin brother Darold and step-mother, Sadie. Survivors include his wife, Alice of Harlan; two sons, Ronald Dale of Harlan and Larry of Chicago; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 2, 1980 at the Harlan Congregational Christian Church with Rev. David E. Cave officiating. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery.
