REV. W. P. GORDON Died On Monday

The Rev. William P. Gordon, a pastor of the Winterset United Presbyterian church for nearly eight years, died Monday, September 24, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John McLees of Winterset. He had been in failing health for several years, and had retired from the ministry last June. He was 69 years of age.

The Rev. Mr. Gordon was a native of Hanover, Ind., where he was born March 25, 1882, a son of George and Junietta Martin Gordon. He graduated from Hanover high school, and attended Monmouth college at Monmouth, Ill., from which he graduated with a B. A. degree in 1906. He then enrolled in the Xenia Theological seminary at Xenia, O., graduating there in 1909, after which he was ordained into the United Presbyterian ministry and took his first pastorate at the West Delhi U.P. church. After a year as pastor there, he entered the Princeton Theological seminary in New Jersey for one year, receiving his B. D. degree. His next appointment was at Farrel, Pa. From there he went to Frenchberg, Tenn. in charge of the group of home mission stations centered there. He later served as pastor at Zenith, Kan., before coming to Winterset nearly nine years ago.

After eight years as pastor of the Winterset U.P. church, he resigned in 1949 to go to Covington, Ga., in search of a warmer climate. Last spring he retired from the active ministry and returned to Winterset to make his home.

The Rev. Mr. Gordon is survived by his wife, the former Jessie Walker of Steubenville, O., whom he married in 1909. He also leaves a son, W. Paul Gordon of Fulda, Minn.; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth McLees of Winterset; and three brothers, G. Paul Gordon of Hawaii, the Rev. H. W.Gordon of Stillwell, Okla., Edward M. Gordon of Hanover, Ind., and Arthur N. Gordon of Waterman, Ill.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. from the Winterset United Presbyterian church. The present pastor, the Rev. S. C. Pickens, will be in charge. He will be assisted by the Rev. P. S. Dykhulsen of Des Moines, synodical superintendent of missions for the United Presbyterian church, the Rev. Clement D. Leohr, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Winterset, and the Rev. William Muir, pastor of the Pitzer United Pesbyterian church. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
