Page 1Dies At Age 101
George Nelson Bennett, probably the oldest resident of Madison County and believed to be it’s last centenarian, died Thursday, July 17, 1975 at Madison Manor Nursing Home. His age was 101 years, three months and two days.
An observance at Madison Manor North was held last year on April 14 by friends and relatives of Mr. Bennett in recognition of his 100th birthday.
Mr. Bennett was born April 15, 1874 in Douglas Township of Madison county, the son of Andrew Bennett and Mary E. Gideon. For two years the Bennett family lived in the log cabin which is presently located in the Winterset City Park, but at that time was near North Branch River.
Farming was Mr. Bennett’s occupation. He farmed along North Branch in Madison Township and also in Douglas Township.
On October 21, 1896, Mr. Bennett was united in marriage with Isabelle Beedle in Union Township. Mrs. Bennett preceded her husband in death October 1, 1962.
Survivors of Mr. Bennett include two sons, Kyle Bennett of Winterset and Ward Bennett of Promise City, Iowa and a daughter, Lela Wolfe of West Des Moines.
Also surviving Mr. Bennett are 14 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, seven children, five brothers and two sisters.
In 1950 Mr. Bennett retired to DeSoto, Iowa, where he resided until he moved to Madison Manor North on May 25, 1970. He was a member of the Madison County Historical Society.
Funeral services for George Bennett were conducted Monday, July 21, 1975 at 1:30 p.m. from Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Madison County.
Officiating at the services was the Rev. Paul Hann.
