Last Of Bevington Family Here Dies
Mrs. May (Mayme) Smalley, last surviving member of the immediate family of the late Dr. C. D. Bevington of Winterset, died at the Memorial hospital last Wednesday, Sept. 19, 1951, after a brief illness. She had suffered a stroke at her home in Winterset on the preceding Sunday night.
Mrs. Smalley was 73 years of age at her death. She was the former Lida May Bevington, daughter of Dr. C. D. and Eliza Heath Bevington, and was born at Winterset Aug. 2, 1878.
Her father was Madison county's wealthiest and most influential citizen over a long period of years. A native of Ohio, he left there in 1849 to join the gold rush to California, but soon returned east and settled in Winterset in 1853.
Through farming and real estate operations he soon amassed a fortune. In 1864, he helped organize the National bank of Winterset, and served as its president for many years. He was one of the projectors of the railroad that became the Winterset branch of the Rock Island, and personally supervised its construction from Summerset to Winterset. At one time he was reported to be the largest individual taxpayer in central Iowa.
Mrs. Smalley spent her entire life as a resident of Winterset. As a young woman she was married to Shirley Alexander. He died many years ago. She later married William Smalley, whose death occurred here in 1938.
Mrs. Smalley leaves no near relatives.
Funeral services were held Friday from the Anderson home for funerals, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Parrott, pastor of the Winterset Methodist Church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
