John W. Leggett, was born in Licking county, Ohio, Sept. 10, 1839 and departed this life at his home in Truro, July 26, aged 81 years, 10 months and 16 days. He was married to Margaret Latta, Jan. 13, 1864. To this union were born eight children: Charles Edwin of St. Charles; James Elmer who died in infancy; Mary Gertrude Dowler of Casper, Wyo.; Cora Augusta James of St.Charles; William Latta Leggett, Nellie E. Fulton, Sarah Porter and John Franklin Leggett of Truro, all of whom, with their bereaved mother were present at his bedside at the time of his death. He also leaves 38 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren to cherish his memory.
He united with the Christian church in March 1863, was baptized by immersion in June, the same year, ever since having adored the gospel of God by a faithful, consistent Christian life.
Deceased was a soldier of the rebellion, having enlisted in the United States service for a term of three years. He was a member of the First Iowa Battery, Light Artillery and was mustered out at Davenport, July 5, 1865. He was a member of Jonathan Roby Post No. 449, G.A.R. Thus one more of our country's defenders, excused from duty and one more grave entitled to the flag and flowers of Decoration Day, has journeyed to the homeland. As a Christian, he was firm; as a husband and father, he was kind and indulgent; and as a citizen, he was honest and upright. His true Christian spirit also fitted him in a noble way to enter that House not built with hands, eternal in the Heavens. He will be missed in the home by his family and friends, but will be remembered as worthy to live and prepared to die.
The funeral service took place on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from the Christian church at Truro, conducted bu Rev. R. L. Raybourn and interment made in the St. Charles cemetery.
