LAWRENCE --- Ruth Boyce Stringham, 103, Lawrence, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at a Lawrence nursing home.

She was born Oct. 9, 1898, on a farm near Winterset, Iowa, the daughter of Grace and Marcus James Boyce. She attended rural schools and graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa honor student with a bachelor's degree in mathematics at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. She worked a short time in an office at Des Moines University in Des Moines, Iowa. She had lived in Lawrence since 1930.

Mrs. Stringham had worked in the office of the Gill Real Estate and Insurance Agency in Lawrence for many years.

Mrs. Stringham was a member of First Baptist Church in Lawrence where she was active in the Sunday school program, Women's Society and served as church treasurer. She also had been involved in Girl Scouts, the Parent-Teacher Association, American Association of University Women and the Ladies Literary League. She was a founding member of The Pilot Club, served Meals on Wheels and was active in the Lawrence Hospital Auxiliary.

She married R. Paul Stringham on Sept. 2, 1926, in Madison County, Iowa. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Howard Stringham, Lawrence; two daughters, Helen M. Fridblom, Lawrence, and Mrs. Sam D. Ferguson, Raymore, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Alma Bunnell, Cedar Falls, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be announced by the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence.

Memorial contributions may be made to the R.P. and Ruth Stringham Memorial Fund at First Baptist Church and sent in care of the funeral home.

RUTH STRINGHAM, KANSAS

Ruth Boyce Stringham, 103, of Lawrence, Kan., died Jan. 8, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Ruth Stringham was born Oct. 9, 1898, in Douglas Township, Madison County, to Marcus James and Grace Boyce. She attended local schools. She received an associate degree in mathematics in 1922 from Grinnell College where she had been a Phi Beta Kapa honor student. She worked in an office at Des Moines University and later for a Des Moines bank before her marriage to R. Paul Stringham on Sept. 2, 1926, at the family farm. They moved to Lawrence, Kan., in 1930 where Ruth worked at Gill Real Estate and Insurance Agency until her retirement at age 69. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Ladies' Literary League, Pilot Club (founding member), Lawrence Hospital Auxiliary and the First Baptist Church where she was active with Sunday School, the Women's Society and was church treasurer. She also had been a Girl Scout leader and involved with Meals on Wheels.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She is survived by two daughters, Helen N. Fridblom of Lawrence and Dorothy Ferguson of Raymore, Mo.; a son, Howard Stringham of Lawrence; a sister, Alma Bunnell of Cedar Falls; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
