Mary Ann Carter was born in Virginia, March 17, 1884 (sic). While she was young she came to Indiana with her parents, and later came to Warren county, Iowa, later coming to Winterset. She was married to Joseph Howard in 1851, and later married to John Hole. Her last marriage was to John Harper in April 22, 1896, who died January 28, 1905. Since that time she has made her home with her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Biggs, where on Sunday afternoon about 3 o'clock she passed away.

The funeral services were held from the home of her sister, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Baptist cemetery north of Winterset.
