SCOTT SHIFFLETT SUCCUMBED SEPT. 7

Was Prominent Resident of Earlham and Dexter Many Years

Scott Shifflett, a prominent citizen of Earlham and Dexter, died Sept. 7 at a Des Moines hospital. He was 54 years of age.

Mr. Shifflett was a native of Illinois, where he was born Oct. 20, 1887, in Bureau county, near Ohio Station. He was the son of Harry and Della Shifflett. When he was 12 years old, he came with his family to Iowa. They settled on a farm near Webster City, living there for one year before moving to the Pitzer neighborhood in Madison county.

In 1907 the family moved to Earlham. Mr. Shifflett was 19 years old at the time, and started to work as a bookkeeper for the Bank of Earlham. In a few years he was elected assistant cashier, and in 1921, following the death of H. S. Thompson, he was made cashier of the bank. He served in this capacity until 1930, when the bank closed. In 1934 he was named manager of the Valley Savings bank office at Dexter. At the time of his death he had served nearly eight years in that capacity.

Mr. Shifflett was educated in the rural schools of the communities in which he lived, and graduated from the Earlham academy with the class of 1907. He completed two courses in the study of law, and a few years ago received the degree of Doctor of Laws from the Blackstone Institute.

He was united with the Earlham Presbyterian church in 1907, and was installed as elder in 1912. In 1937 he transferred to the Dexter Presbyterian church, serving there also as elder.

He was married on Sept. 8, 1917, to Mary Elizabeth Price. They were the parents of five children.

Mr. Shifflett was a member of the Masonic and Eastern Star lodges, the Boy Scout advisory council, and was clerk of the town of Dexter.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Shifflett of Diagonal; his wife; the five children, Paul, Ruth, John, Harry and Esther Shifflett, all of Dexter; a sister, Mrs. Elma Rowen of Earlham; and a brother, G. A. Shifflett of Diagonal.

Funeral services were held Sept. 9 from the Presbyterian church at Dexter, in charge of the Rev. S. C. Wadding, pastor, assisted by the Rev. S. R. Ovorholser of the Earlham Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.
