MRS. JOHN HAINES DIED ON THURSDAY

Elderly Woman Was Resident of This Community Past 40 Years

Mrs. John Haines, a resident of Madison county for the past 40 years, died at her home in Winterset last Thursday after a long illness. She was 81 years of age.

Mrs. Haines was the former Mary Alice Andrews, daughter of John and Mary Starns Andrews, and was born in Fayette county, Ohio, on April 9, 1862. After the death of her parents, she was taken into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Fishback at the age of two years.

When she was 14 years old, the family moved to Columbia City, Ind., and five years later to Champaign, Ill. There she lived until her marriage to John Haines, which occurred on Jan. 31, 1883. They lived near Fisher, Ill., until 1889, when they moved to Hardin county, Iowa. In 1903 they moved to Madison county, which had since been their home.

Mr. and Mrs. Haines were the parents of seven children, one of whom, Mrs. Etta Chamberlain, died in 1926. Mr. Haines died in 1936.

Early in life Mrs. Haines had united with the Methodist church at Alden, afterwards transferring to the Zion Methodist church near Winterset, and in 1910 to the Winterset Church of Christ, where she attended regularly as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by six children: Mrs. Emma Algoe and Ollie Haines of Peru, Mrs. Maude Wilson of Grangeville, Idaho, Mrs. Winnie Anderson and Ora Haines of Winterset, and Marion Haines of Lewiston, Ida. She also leaves an aged sister, Mrs. Laura Herren of Weaverville, N. C., 18 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Winterset Church of Christ, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Tom Foglesong, assisted by the Rev. L. F. Davis. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
