WILLIS SUTHERLAND, Winterset

Willis Day Sutherland, 80, of Winterset died of cancer Feb. 13, 2003, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 17, at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset, with Pastor Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Willis Sutherland was born Feb. 5, 1923, in Oskaloosa to Victor and Blanche (McMahan) Sutherland. On July 15, 1942, he married Lois E. Allbaugh in Lancaster, Mo. Willis had retired from Peter's Construction as a heavy equipment operator. A resident of Winterset since 1961, he had previously resided in Council Bluffs. He was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II, and a member of American Legion Post 184.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Paul Sutherland, Bud Sutherrland, Pat Sutherland and Mack Sutherland; and four sisters, Beatrice Brown, Cleo Daynes, Leon Beardsley and Mary Gass.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Winterset; two daughters, Linda Costello of Garden Valley, Calif., and Sandra Berry of Winterset; and two grandchildren.
