Deaath Of LYLE SUMMY At 56

Newspaperman Lyle Summy, former owner, editor and co-publisher of the weekly Earlham Echo, died last Tuesday, December 7, 1976, following a day of work at the newspaper where he had been employed since 1962. He was 56 years of age.

The son of Lester and May Templeton Summy, Lyle Summy was born March 31, 1920, in Linden, Iowa. His marriage to Dolores Dunbar took place September 2, 1941, in Des Moines.

Owner of the Earlham Echo for four and one half years before his retirement due to health in July of this year, Mr. Summy farmed in Madison County before joining the Earlham newspaper in 1962.

Lyle Summy was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Adel VFW post and American Legion at Earlham. He was also a member of the Earlham Lions club and an honorary member of the Earlham Fire Department, serving with that force since 1963.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores; three sons, Terry of Adel, Kenneth of Earlham and Kevin of Ankeny; two daughters, Kay Cockrum and Karla Day of Earlham and nine grandchildren.

Also surviving are five brothers and four sisters, Vern of Yale, Iowa, Richard of Pacifica, Calif., Raymond and Harold of Des Moines, Leonard of Carlisle, Iowa, Ethel Kunkle of Stuart, Iowa, Pat Lancaster of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., Betty Bryan and Mary Sue Kearns of Lewiston, Idaho; and his step-mother, Mrs. Bertha Summy of Menlo.

Lyle Summy was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services for Lyle Summy were conducted Friday, Dec. 10, at 1:30 p.m. from the United Methodist Church of Earlham with burial at the Earlham Cemetery. Rev. Dave Higdon officiated.
