Joyce Ione Schmitt Kruse, 77, died of Parkinson's disease May 14, 2003, at Winterset Care Center North.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held in Peterson at a later date. Burial of the cremains will be at Oakland Cemetery in Peterson.
Joyce Kruse was born July 3, 1925, to Laurence and Pearl (Johnson) Davis of rural Peterson. On Jan. 14, 1946, she married William H. Schmitt in Peterson. Her husband's career in the Air Force took the family to England, Spokane, Wash., El Paso, Texas, and Omaha, Neb. In 1970, the family returned to Peterson to live. Upon Mr. Schmitt's death in 1972, she moved to Primghar, later marrying Raymond Kruse in 1977. Upon his death in 1998, she moved to Winterset. Joyce had taught school in Nebraska, Peterson and the Primghar Community School District, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Primghar Education Association (past president), Primghar Women's Club, Primghar Progress Club, Retired Teacher's Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, United Church of Christ in Primghar and the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and a brother, Dale Davis.
She is survived by two sons, Kylon Schmitt of Winterset and Kevin Schmitt of Inola, Okla.; a daughter, Joy Meyer of Chandler, Ariz.; three stepsons, Tom Kruse of Cherokee, Don Kruse of Gowrie and Roger Kruse of Crofton, Md.; a stepdaughter, Jan Cuthrell of Tucson, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial contributions in Joyce's name, may be directed to the activity fund at Winterset Care Center North or the Winterset Elementary School Library.
Arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
