Fern Kreft, Winterset

Fern Evelyn Kreft, 98, of Winterset, died May 28, 2004, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 1, at St. Charles Cemetery with Dr. John Shaull officiating.

Fern Kreft was born Dec. 27, 1905 in Madison County to George F. and Mary Frances (McKinney) Nicoson. She attended country schools, graduating from St. Charles High School. She also attended Simpson College for one year. Fern taught school for a brief time and then was employed by Meredith Publishing Company in the clerical department for over 20 years, retiring in 1968. She was married to Noble Nixon in 1923 in Warren County. Later, she was united in marriage to Fred H. Kreft in August 1949 in Polk County. She lived in Des Moines for 40 years, moving to Winterset in 1987. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Kreft; three brothers, Clarence, Keith and Frank Nicoson; and a sister, Faye Baugh.

She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie (Nixon) Downs of St. Charles; and two grandsons, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Middle River Hospice in Winterset.

Arrangements were handled by Kale Funeral Homes of Osceola and Truro.
