Joseph Hyden Knox, son of Milton and Hannah Knox, was born in Hannibal, Missouri, September 14, 1856, and died August 25, 1953. In a few more days he would have reached his 97th birthday.
At the age of 18 years of age he came to Iowa with a friend known as Uncle Seth Wilson. After coming to Iowa he was engaged in farming in Madison county. The last 17 years he has made his home among his children.
Joe as he was known by his neighbors and friends, found much enjoyment in the out doors and spent a great deal of his time there as long as he was able. He also was a great lover of music. Few outside of his immediate family had the pleasure of enjoying his beautiful tenor voice or hearing him play his violin which he brought from his native state.
On February 10, 1886 he was united in marriage with Susan A. Taylor who was his companion for 50 years until death claimed her in August 1936. They were the parents of ten children. A son and a daughter, Bernard and Elizabeth, preceded them in death.
Those left to cherish his memory are Ray Knox of Duchesne, Utah; Lois and Clyde Chamberlain of Earlham; Bernice and Willis Clague of Winterset; William and Mable Knox of Robinette, Oregon; Anice and Frank Brown of Adel; Edith and Albert Nelson of Burlingame, California; Jessie and Robert Rush of near San Diego, California; Granville and Frances Knox of Glendale, California; 17 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and seven great, grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
