Wednesday, December 22, 1943Henry L. Davis, former Madison county auditor, died at his home in Des Moines Wednesday, Dec. 15th. He had always made his home in Madison county until 1939, when he moved to Des Moines, and since that time he had been employed as an auditor for the state tax commission.
Mr. Davis, the son of Rev. and Mrs. L. B. Davis, was born here March 14, 1886. He was graduated from Winterset high school in 1907. Later he attended the Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. He served as Madison county auditor for four years, and was the Republican state representative from the county in 1937 and 1938. He was a past master of the local Masonic lodge, junior grand deacon of the Grand Lodge, a member of Za Ga Zig temple and a former member of the Knights of Pythias of Winterset.
He is survived by his widow, Ruth; two sons, Melvin L. Davis of St. Charles and Donald C. Davis, a cadet in the Coast Guard at New London, Conn. He also leaves a brother, B. B. Davis, and a sister, Mrs. Ernest Preston of Winterset; and two grandchildren, Jan and Van Davis of St. Charles.
The Rev. L. K. Bishop, pastor of the Central Church of Christ conducted the funeral services at the E. Carl White funeral home in Des Moines, Dec. 18th at 1:30 p.m. The remains were brought to Winterset, where the local Masons had charge of the burial rites at 3:30 p.m.
